The Pomeroy and Newark Railroad is a history of a defunct railroad that operated in the Southern Chester County, Pennsylvania and Northern New Castle County Delaware for some sixty-seven years beginning in 1872 and operating until the early 1960's. Although part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system, it maintained a separate identity for its life, running from Pomeroy, Pennsylvania to Newark Delaware. At some point it was billed as “the railroad that never should have been built,” most likely never turning a profit, however it became a dominant part of a rural area of Chester County. Today this part of Chester County is still rural, but one can trace the railroad. This book attempts to capture a portion of the rich history of this railroad. Read more
